This project started when, just a day or so after the California Public Health Emergency was announced and a lockdown was imposed, I saw a man in my hometown of Santa Monica walking down the street hugging trees. I knew something visual was happening, people acting outside of their normal selves as a way to cope. As a photographer who loves nothing more than finding the caught moment, this strange poetic visual dance was interesting to me. Sometimes odd. Sometimes comedic. Always visual. I cycled the streets with just my Fuji X100 camera, observing and absorbing. The people of Santa Monica, the birthplace of skate culture and the original Muscle Beach, are used to a healthy, outdoors, social lifestyle, so how would they react? As we learn to cope with a whole new normal, I wanted to document the emotions of this changing human experience. These are strange days indeed.
