Panel Discussion at Santa Monica College

This week I took part in an amazing panel discussion on the business of Photography at Santa Monica College. Organized by the venerable Mr. Anthony Nex, along with my co-panelists Shelly Waldman, Katie Cornett and Dennis Dunbar, we covered many topics from what inspires us and what motivates us, to what downright frustrates us.

Freelancing is a roller coaster ride and for me personally, seeing how my fellow professionals deal with the same daily challenges, was enlightening. I hope the students got as much out of it as I did!

We were really just the warm up act for an amazing presentation by Thomas Werner on the business of Fine Art Photography. It’s the second time I’ve got to experience one of Thomas’s in-depth presentations, and all I can say is, if you ever get the chance, jump at it. So much valuable information. What I love most about his lectures is it really feels like you’re back in school, listening to your favorite lecturer tell it like it is! Thanks again Anthony for putting on a great event.

One Mile and a Cloud of Dust

Land Speed Racing, El Mirage Dry Lake, California. The high octane screams, the desolate landscape, the stainless steel against a moon-like surface. It’s an iconic, timeless visual that echoes the gritty determination of man and machine has no boundaries.

Sloan Estate for Le Pan Magazine

A bit late on posting this one but last summer I was sent to Napa Valley to photograph the iconic vineyards of Sloan Estate, one of the most exclusive hideaways in the famed wine region. It turned out to be a pretty productive one-day shoot and a nice little travel piece. Andy Dick Keeps On Licking

Andy Dick keeps on lickingThey say everyone in L.A. has an Andy Dick story. This is ours. Der Spiegel contacted over a hundred people in Hollywood accused of some kind of sexual misconduct for a #MeToo story. All declined to comment or even reply, except one, Andy Dick; “Sure, sounds good!” The actor-comedian had recently been fired from two movies for licking and groping on-set. Yet, we found him to be quite unrepentant about it all, apparently it’s just kind of his thing. It was a wild roller coaster ride of an evening for our shoot and interview. Bizarrely, there was even a member of the band Happy Mondays sitting in the corner. As we began to make our exit, Andy decided to go ahead and leave his mark once again….on one of our crew! As was later reported in The Hollywood Reporter. Just another day at the office.Andy Dick keeps on licking

Ali Wong for NBC News

We shot this nice little interview piece a while ago for nbcnews.com. and I finally got around to making a director’s cut. Created entirely with just a two person crew, I conducted the interview, directed lighting, three cameras, operated two and oversaw audio. It’s amazing what you can do with a capable assistant. Big shout out to Mr. David A. Fearn. Thanks buddy. Ali Wong is a total crack up and if you get to see her live, take it! She’s currently a writer on the hit NBC show “Fresh Off The Boat’.
